The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Albert Shingiro, held a press briefing today to officially present the key achievements of his ministry for the second half of the 2023–2024 fiscal year, covering the period from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024 today February 3, 2025 at Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel.
During his address, Minister Shingiro emphasized the ministry’s two core pillars: strengthening Burundi’s vision for national development and fostering diplomatic and economic partnerships with other countries, international organizations, and foreign investors. These principles align with Burundi’s long-term development strategy, which aims for national self-reliance by 2040 and economic prosperity by 2060.
The ministry’s achievements are categorized into three key strategic areas:
Protecting Burundi’s Interests Abroad – This includes strengthening diplomatic relations, safeguarding the rights and interests of Burundian citizens living and working abroad, and ensuring the country’s sovereignty remains uncompromised. Minister Shingiro stated, “Our diplomatic efforts are focused on ensuring that Burundians abroad feel protected and supported, while upholding the nation’s sovereignty.”
Regional and International Cooperation – The ministry has prioritized collaboration with neighboring countries, regional organizations, and global partners to promote economic growth, trade, and political stability based on mutual interests. “Strong partnerships are key to Burundi’s growth, and we remain committed to fostering meaningful cooperation with international stakeholders,” the Minister emphasized.
Institutional Strengthening and Good Governance – Efforts have been made to improve administrative efficiency, fight corruption, and ensure responsible management of public funds. The ministry is also promoting a strong work ethic among its employees to boost productivity and enhance Burundi’s global economic standing. “Good governance and accountability are at the heart of our ministry’s mission,” Minister Shingiro affirmed.
Key Priorities for 2025
Looking ahead, Minister Shingiro outlined several strategic initiatives for 2025:
- Implementing a new foreign policy framework focused on economic diplomacy.
- Protecting Burundi’s national interests, sovereignty, and cultural heritage.
- Enhancing Burundi’s international reputation to attract investment and tourism.
- Strengthening global partnerships to address international security and peace challenges.
- Constructing and renovating Burundian embassies abroad to reinforce the country’s diplomatic presence.
- Expanding scholarship opportunities and training programs for Burundian youth and civil servants to improve skills and expertise.
- Negotiating agreements that enable Burundians to seek employment opportunities abroad under secure and regulated conditions.
The Minister concluded by calling on all Burundians to actively contribute to the country’s development, aligning their efforts with the national vision for 2040 and 2060. “Every Burundian has a role to play in shaping our future, and together, we can achieve sustainable growth and prosperity,” he urged.
