Sintuka highlights the significant challenges Burundian students face when applying to US universities. The differences between the French-based Burundian education system and the English-based American system are profound. “In Burundi, students are used to answering questions briefly, whereas in the American system, responses need to be extensive and detailed,” he explains.

The language barrier is another major obstacle. Proficiency in English is essential for passing tests like the TOEFL and SAT, which are required by many US universities. The application process is rigorous and time-consuming, often taking more than six months to complete. “It’s not just about filling out forms; it requires intensive preparation and perseverance,” Sintuka notes

Mentorship and collaboration

Beyond his official duties, Sintuka emphasizes building personal relationships with students. “Anyone interested in studying in the US becomes a friend. I accompany them through the entire journey,” he shares. This mentorship is vital in keeping students motivated and resilient. “Without support, they can easily lose courage and give up,” he adds.

Sintuka collaborates with high schools and universities across Burundi to promote US educational opportunities. He mentors students from their early years of high school, explaining the application process and the importance of planning. “I work closely with school administrations to highlight the benefits of US education and the availability of scholarships,” he says.

Given the number of high schools in Burundi, Sintuka uses a targeted approach, sending communications to many school directors and following up with those who respond. This method allows him to reach and support as many students as possible.

Guiding Burundian Students to Success in US Universities

Despite the challenges, Sintuka has numerous success stories. “I have guided seven students who secured scholarships to US universities, with one receiving $54,000 for four years,” he proudly states. His dedication extends beyond office hours, as he often assists students late into the night. “Knowing the importance of education keeps me going,” he emphasizes.

The pre-departure orientation he conducts is crucial in preparing students for life in the US. “We ensure they understand cultural differences and are ready to handle homesickness,” he underlines This preparation helps prevent issues such as academic failure or social isolation.

Sintuka also discussed several initiatives led by the US Embassy that he is very proud of. He mentions the creation of Burundi Alumni Association which has recently launched its activities. He emphasizes also the Pan African Youth Leadership Program which brings young Burundians to the US for a four-week exchange, fostering networks and collaborative projects. Another significant initiative he is proud of is the English Language Micro Scholarship Access Program, which teaches English, computer literacy, critical thinking, and community service. “The success rate of students in this program is 100% in the national exam, and many secure university placements across Africa, namely Ghana, Cameroon, South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya,” he notes.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

Looking ahead, Sintuka aims to expand his impact by engaging and training youth across Burundi. “My goal is to plant seeds of inspiration in different parts of the country,” he says. He plans to leverage the resources provided by the US government to continue his mission of enhancing educational opportunities for Burundian students.

In conclusion, Sintuka’s unwavering dedication and inspirational journey serves as a beacon of hope for many Burundian students aspiring to achieve their academic dreams in the United States. “Never give up. Education opens doors to endless possibilities,” he encourages the youth.

Note that Sintuka’s commitment to education and public engagement remains a powerful force for positive change in the Burundian community.
