Pélagie Nimpaye is an artisan who has successfully balanced her professional career with her passion for handmade crafts. Residing in Busoro, Muha commune, in Bujumbura, she holds a degree in ISCO from the University of Burundi and later pursued Law at Martin Luther King University. She currently serves as a Legal Librarian while contributing to Ndongozi magazine as a writer on human rights issues. Beyond her official duties, Pélagie is an accomplished artisan specializing in crochet. She meticulously crafts handbags, sweaters for children and adults, table mats, coasters, tablecloths, baby blankets, gloves, and other handmade items.

Pélagie’s journey into crocheting began at a young age. Growing up in rural Burundi, she witnessed children struggling to carry school supplies, which inspired her to create small bags for notebooks. By the time she reached her fifth year of primary school, her handcrafted handbags had gained admiration for their fine craftsmanship. However, academic demands in secondary school forced her to pause this hobby.

After completing her university studies and settling into a new neighborhood, her passion for crochet was reignited. As she started her married life, she found joy in decorating her home with crocheted table mats. Encouraged by visitors who admired her work, she turned her craft into a small-scale business, initially as a means of managing household expenses.

To market her products, Pélagie primarily relies on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp status, where she showcases her designs. Interested customers place orders directly, allowing her to manage production efficiently.

Despite her dedication, she faces a major challenge: the preference among Burundians for imported goods over locally made products. However, her work provides her with a unique advantage; she can wear her own creations while generating additional income for her household. She takes pride in offering customized, high-quality pieces that meet her clients’ expectations.

Pélagie’s entrepreneurial spirit has earned her a place in the AFAB “Association des Femmes d’Affaires du Burundi“, a network that connects businesswomen and fosters knowledge-sharing. She believes in the power of self-sufficiency and encourages women to embrace their talents. “No matter how small, every income-generating activity matters,” she says. “Even a business that earns BIF 5,000 can contribute to household expenses.”

Through her work, Pélagie is not only supporting her family but also inspiring other women to pursue financial independence through creativity and determination.
