The Burundian Society of Cardiology and Mugangapreneur Innovation Lab, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, organized a media workshop for the official launch of May Measure Month as part of the celebration of the day world of high blood pressure. These activities took place on Friday May 17, 2024 at the Amahoro Hotel in downtown Bujumbura.

This workshop was organized under the theme โ€œMeasure your blood pressure correctly, control it and live longโ€. This was with the aim of opening the global awareness campaign and massive screening for high blood pressure, screening which will be carried out in more than 90 countries around the world. The activities of this workshop aim to improve the prevention and control of this disease of Arterial Hypertension

To better launch this campaign, medical doctors such as Cardiologist Prof Elysรฉe Baransaka, Neurologist Patrice Barasukana, Nephrologist in the Faculty of Medicine, Romeo Irankunda and Franck Nziza, Public Health Physician and Researcher made presentations on the concept of Hypertension, its complications, diseases linked to this disease, prevention, etc.

In his presentation, Neurologist Patrice Barasukana said that high blood pressure (hypertension) corresponds to an abnormal increase in blood pressure on the wall of the arteries. He also added that we cannot know its causes when it appears, but that it is favored by risk factors such as tobacco, salt, alcohol, obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, mental health, diet, air pollution and climate change.

When you are attacked by high blood pressure, other diseases can occur, including kidney complications (kidney failure), cognitive disorders, and so on. To reduce the risk of having a stroke, there are preventive measures which are regular checking of blood pressure, pulse control, a balanced, low-salt diet, daily physical activity, stopping smoking, stopping drinking alcohol, eat fruit, avoid repetitive stress.

In the question asked by Plume Mugabonihera and Joselyne Kwizera wanted to know the difference between heart disease (Cardiovascular) and Hypertension, the same question that many people wonder and confuse about which disease actually causes hypertensive. Prof. Patrice Barasukana answered that there is the big difference: โ€œthere is the big difference. Cardiovascular diseases bring together a set of conditions of the heart and blood vessels, in particular coronary diseases, diseases cerebrovascular and rheumatic heart diseases, while we speak of arterial hypertension, the pressure of blood in the arteries is too high.

Doctors inform that the screening campaign begins on June 15 this year in Bujumbura and the target beneficiary is anyone over 18 years old and 2000 people will be screened. They also invite people to do regular screenings and avoid consuming products that accelerate this disease.
