Justa Sindayigaya, a native of Gitega and a trained biomedical engineer, is leading a transformative initiative in Burundi’s healthcare sector. With a vision to revolutionize biomedical engineering in a country where the field is still in its early stages, Justa has founded Alpha Biomedical Services—a project dedicated to enhancing the use, maintenance, and management of medical devices. Through this initiative, she aims to significantly improve healthcare services in Burundi.

Her motivation to create Alpha Biomedical Services stemmed from a critical realization during her master’s studies: a glaring shortage of biomedical companies in Burundi. “I saw the immense gap in medical equipment management in our healthcare system, and I knew something had to be done,” Justa recalls. Her commitment to filling this gap is driving her to pave new paths for biomedical engineering in the country.

An Inspiring Journey

Justa’s journey into biomedical engineering began with a bachelor’s degree specializing in medical imaging, followed by advanced studies at the Higher Institute of Biotechnology in Sfax, Tunisia, where she earned her master’s in biomedical maintenance. Through internships in companies specializing in medical equipment sales and after-sales services, radiology centers, and clinics, she gained invaluable hands-on experience.

“These experiences helped me develop the necessary skills in the maintenance, upkeep, and quality control of medical devices. They prepared me for the work I’m doing today,” she shares.

Professionally, Justa expanded her expertise by working as a biomedical engineer for the Gould Family Foundation (GFF), covering Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “Working with GFF gave me a deep understanding of the challenges in managing medical equipment in different hospital settings,” she says, reflecting on her role in improving healthcare systems across the region.

Innovative Solutions for Healthcare

Alpha Biomedical Services sets itself apart with its emphasis on the traceability of medical devices. By enabling healthcare facilities to maintain accurate inventories and loan records, the company ensures that medical equipment is optimally managed and utilized.

Looking ahead, Justa is set to introduce Computer-Aided Maintenance Management (CMMS), a digital platform that will enhance the planning, monitoring, and maintenance of medical devices. “This system will not only improve operational efficiency but also reduce downtime of critical medical equipment,” she explains, adding that CMMS will be a game-changer for healthcare facilities in Burundi.

Challenges and Commitment

Despite its promising start, Alpha Biomedical Services faces significant hurdles. A shortage of qualified technicians and limited access to spare parts present ongoing challenges. In addition, budget constraints in many healthcare institutions hinder investment in crucial maintenance contracts. “Preventive maintenance is often overlooked because of financial limitations, but it’s essential for the longevity of medical devices,” Justa emphasizes.

Beyond her entrepreneurial efforts, Justa is deeply engaged in youth advocacy and migrant rights through her involvement with the Association for Progressive African Youth (AJAP). “I believe that youth must have a voice, and we have to continue pushing for the protection of migrant rights,” she says, highlighting her broader commitment to social issues.

Under her visionary leadership, Alpha Biomedical Services is not only improving healthcare in Burundi but also inspiring a new generation of biomedical engineers across Africa.
