On December 18, 2024, the Royal Palace Hotel in Burundi hosted a landmark event organized by CARE International Burundi. The event marked the unveiling of an innovative initiative, “Belle Colline: A Safe Haven for Women and Girls, Free from Gender-Based Violence.”

The ceremony was honored by the presence of Pontien Hatungimana, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of National Solidarity, Social Affairs, Human Rights, and Gender. Other distinguished attendees included senior officials from various ministries, representatives from United Nations agencies, and partners of CARE International Burundi, such as FVS, GLID, MIPAREC, SACODE, ABUBEF, RBU 2000 Plus, COOCAFEM, and ABATANGAMUCO.

In her address, Ms. José Ntabahungu, President of CARE International Burundi, described the approach as holistic and transformative. Developed under the “Win-Win for Gender, Agriculture, and Nutrition” project, part of the GEWEP 3 program, this initiative aims to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) while fostering hillside development. By addressing all aspects of individual and community life, the program seeks to challenge deeply rooted gender inequality norms. So far, it has shown promising results across 124 hills in 72 communes within eight provinces.

Beneficiaries of the program have become ambassadors of the approach, sharing compelling testimonies about their transformation. They recounted a past marked by communal conflicts, unwanted pregnancies, drug abuse, GBV, and illegal unions, all of which perpetuated poverty. Thanks to CARE Burundi’s efforts, communities now report significant improvements. Women and men collaborate on household and community decisions, promoting development and unity.

Pontien Hatungimana commended CARE Burundi for its innovative and impactful contributions to community development. Speaking on behalf of the government, he emphasized the importance of such initiatives in improving the well-being of Burundian citizens. “The government reaffirms its unwavering support for CARE’s future projects aimed at saving lives, eradicating poverty, and achieving social justice,” he stated.

This groundbreaking initiative reflects CARE International Burundi’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and empowering communities to take ownership of their transformation. Through education, awareness-raising, and community mobilization, the program not only combats GBV but also nurtures gender equity and economic progress.

As the approach continues to expand, its impact on transforming lives and communities offers hope for a future where Burundian women and girls can live free from violence and inequality. The event underscored the power of collaboration between organizations, government, and communities in driving meaningful change.
