Guy Samandari holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Alabama State University since May 2024. He is currently pursuing a Master of Accountancy with a concentration in Data Analysis at the same institution, expected to graduate in May 2025. Throughout his academic journey, he’s been recognized for his academic excellence, being on the President’s and Dean’s Lists, and receiving various scholarships and awards.
Samandari reveals that his decision to study in the United States is driven by his ambition to excel in the field of finance and accounting, with a specific interest in data analysis. « The exposure to cutting-edge technology, advanced curriculum, and the multicultural environment at Alabama State University has been pivotal in my educational journey », he confides.
His motivation to pursue higher education in the U.S. stems also from his desire to gain a global perspective and leverage the robust educational opportunities available there. « The chance to engage in diverse academic and extracurricular activities, such as being a Propel Ambassador and winning competitions like the Techstars Startup Weekend, has been instrumental in shaping my professional and personal growth. Additionally, the opportunity to work in different capacities, including as a peer tutor and an international recruiter, has provided me with invaluable experience and a broad skill set », he tells.
Weather adaptation and English proficiency
Adapting to the weather differences between Burundi and the United States has been relatively smooth forGuy Samandari, especially because he is studying in Alabama. « Unlike the northern states, Alabama does not experience severe cold weather, which made the transition easier. The climate here is generally milder, and while we do have occasional storms, they are not too frequent. This similarity in weather has allowed me to focus on my studies and activities without the added challenge of adjusting to extreme cold conditions », he says.
Given that in Burundian most schools teach courses in French, Guy Samandari managed to study English and become fluent in an academic setting by challenging himself and dedicating a significant amount of time to improving his language skills. « I spent countless hours in the library reading books, academic articles, and other resources to enhance my vocabulary and comprehension. Additionally, I actively practiced speaking English in various settings, including study groups and classroom discussions. This constant practice and immersion in the language helped me quickly adapt and become proficient, enabling me to excel in my studies and participate fully in academic activities », he recounts.
A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) above all
As Guy starts his Master’s program in Accountancy at Alabama State University this fall, his primary goals are to acquire enough credits to qualify for the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) examination and to gain comprehensive knowledge in data analysis. According to him, achieving these goals will equip him with the essential credentials and skills needed to excel in the accounting profession. « The CPA certification is a crucial step in my career path, as it will enhance my professional credibility and open up advanced opportunities in the field. Additionally, mastering data analysis will enable me to leverage data-driven insights to improve financial decision-making and business strategies, making me a more valuable asset in any organization », he stresses.
Guy plans to pursue a PhD in International Business after completing his Master’s degree as it will allow him to delve deeper into global business dynamics, cross-cultural management, and international market strategies. His goal is therefore to contribute to academic research in this field and to gain a thorough understanding of the complexities of international business operations. “I aim to leverage this knowledge to influence business practices on a global scale and to potentially teach and mentor the next generation of business professionals », he declares.
A good plan for his home country, Burundi
Guy’s long-term career goal is to return to his home country, Burundi, and contribute to its economic development. He aspires to establish a prominent financial accounting firm that will play a significant role in supporting and enhancing the economic landscape of Burundi. « By leveraging the knowledge and skills I gain from my degree in Accountancy, I aim to provide high-quality financial services, promote transparency, and help businesses and individuals make informed financial decisions. This firm will not only create job opportunities but also foster economic growth and stability in Burundi. My ultimate vision is to make a positive and lasting impact on Burundi’s economy, helping it to thrive and prosper », he puts.
He continues, “I always have Burundi in my heart because it is the country where I was born and raised. No matter where I go, I always keep in mind that I am originally from Burundi. This is why I chose to return and do my internship at the Ministry of Finance and Budget. I wanted to gain a deep understanding of how our economy works. I am very grateful to the Minister of Finance, for allowing me to do my internship there. I have learned so much about how our economy system operates. I plan to use the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired to contribute significantly to Burundi’s development. My long-term goal is to help foster economic growth and stability in my home country, leveraging my expertise to make a meaningful impact.»
A wink to the Burundian students aspiring to study in the United States
From his own experience, Guy advises Burundians who would like to further their studies in the U.S. to embrace the opportunity with confidence and determination. « Do not be afraid of the challenges that come with studying abroad. Success in your academic journey will require discipline, concentration, and a strong work ethic. Stay focused on your goals, manage your time effectively, and make use of the resources and support systems available to you. Engage actively with your professors and peers, and take advantage of extracurricular activities to broaden your experience and skills. With dedication and perseverance, you will undoubtedly achieve success and make the most of your educational experience in the United States », he underlines.
