The 9th Congress of the Order of Professional Accountants of Burundi was concluded on December 13, 2024 at La Détente. This event was highlighted by a certificate award ceremony for 300 graduates from three OPC cohorts who had completed training under the Transitional Qualification Program in collaboration with the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB).

One of the graduates, Ms. Carine Nshimirimana, shared her satisfaction. “Certainly, the journey has been long, but today, we can be proud of this significant step that the Burundian accounting profession has achieved on the international stage. From now on, with the ‘Certified Public Accountant’ (CPA) qualification, a Burundian accountant can compete with their peers worldwide in the job market.”

Mr. Joachim Yamuremyi, a trainer and council member of the Order of Professional Accountants, emphasized the positive impact of this achievement for Burundi. According to him, the country now has reliable accountants capable of producing financial data and reports that meet international standards. This development will reassure financial partners, donors, and economic operators, while also helping to attract more investments.

As an associate member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the Order of Professional Accountants will be better positioned to combat financial malpractice and strengthen the regulation of the accounting profession.

Mr. Yamuremyi also confirmed that these training programs will continue to be offered and will eventually become mandatory for practicing as an accountant. Over time, these modules will be integrated into the curricula of all universities training future accountants in Burundi.

Speaking on behalf of the president of the Order of Professional Accountants president, Mr. Joachim congratulated the newly certified accountants and encouraged them to uphold ethical conduct and exemplary professional attitudes. He urged them to work with confidentiality, integrity, and respect for standards, while contributing to enhancing the image of the Burundian accounting profession and, by extension, the country’s reputation on the international stage.

This congress marks a significant milestone in the development of the accounting sector in Burundi and its integration into the global network of financial professionals.
