From December 11 to 14, 2024, Burundi is set to host a major event in the tourism sector: the Burundi Tourism Week (BTW). This event, organized under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Burundi and sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Transport, Industry, and Tourism, will take place in #Bujumbura and will highlight the country’s tourism potential, with a particular focus on the development of domestic tourism.
The official launch of this event took place on November 13, 2024, during a press briefing at City Hill Hotel, where the organizers unveiled the key details of the program. Under the auspices of Burundi Tourism, the Development and Promotion Agency for Tourism in Burundi, the event promises to be a true showcase for industry players, a meeting point for professionals, and a space for exchanging ideas to promote local tourist attractions.
Burundi Tourism Week stands out for its richness and ambition. Several activities are planned throughout the week, with highlights spread over four days.
On December 11 and 12, 2024, the event will begin with the Burundi Tourism Forum, a symposium bringing together tourism sector experts. The goal of this forum, which will take place at the Donatus Conference Center, is to engage in discussions about the challenges and prospects of tourism in Burundi. Industry professionals will have the opportunity to debate solutions for revitalizing the sector and making it an economic development driver, particularly in the context of domestic tourism.
From December 11 to 13, the tourism exhibition will be one of the main highlights of the week, providing local businesses (hotels, travel agencies, transporters, etc.) with a platform to present their offerings. This visibility space will both highlight local initiatives and foster partnerships among sector stakeholders.
December 13 will feature a Fam-trip (familiarization trip), an initiative that will allow key players in the tourism sector to explore the natural and cultural treasures of Mwaro Province. The goal of this trip is to raise awareness among participants about the diversity of the country’s tourism offerings while showcasing lesser-known regions.
Finally, on December 14, 2024, the event will take on a more festive tone with a sporting activity, followed by a Gala Evening. The evening will conclude the week with the presentation of the Burundi Tourism Awards, a ceremony that will recognize those who have contributed to promoting tourism despite economic and social challenges.

Mrs. Dative Uwimana, a member of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of tourism as a lever for reducing unemployment and generating foreign exchange. According to her, the sector can become a driver of sustainable development for Burundi, and it is essential for Burundians to support and invest in this field.
Mr. Jacques Bigirimana, Director General of Tourism, called for national unity. He stressed the need for Burundians to rediscover their country and promote domestic tourism. “We must love our country, visit our tourist sites, and encourage others to do the same,” he stated, while rejecting the negative stereotypes that tarnish Burundi’s image internationally.

With Burundi Tourism Week, the country is taking an important step in showcasing its tourism potential. By focusing on domestic tourism, this event aims not only to promote Burundi’s lesser-known attractions but also to encourage Burundians to actively participate in the growth of a prosperous tourism sector.
This event could mark the beginning of a new era for tourism in Burundi, contributing to the national economy while celebrating the diversity and beauty of this Central and East African nation.
